Q - Lets talk about mechanics for a minute. It has been said you have a great dart stroke, how did you develop your technique? A - Hard work and alot of practice. In the beginning, you have to train your muscles to perform the same way every time. Really the only way to accomplish this task is to repeat the same movement over and over again - there is no shortcuts. When I first started playing because I was so young top players would always give me advice. Basically, I took bits a pieces from alot of players depending on what worked for me.
Q - How important is having good form? A - First of all, there are no style points awarded in darts. Just as individuals vary in other characteristics, so do they vary in how they throw a dart. With that said, there are a few attributes that tend to cross over among top players. So in those areas I'd say form is important to consistency. Q - What tips would you give to new players trying to improve their form. What are the key areas to focus on? A - Well, balance is important of course. Its important to keep a solid base to eliminate movement. The key is to restrict movement to only those body parts neccessary to throw the dart. If you can combine economy of motion with an aggressive folllow-through your going to become more consistent. And consistency is the heart of being a successful dart player. Q - You mentioned earlier that you started playing darts at a young age. How old were you when you started and do you think starting young is an advantage? A - I started playing around the house at 9 years old. It is definately an advantage. Many of the top players now got their start in the youth ranks. Training the hand eye coordination along with muscle memory at a young age seems to really ingrain proper technique that carries over later in life. Plus darts is just a great activity for young people to be involved with, it teaches them many useful skills. |
